 The Automatic Transmission Rebuild Process

This process is very delicate as it involves the separation of the transmission from the engine and driveline. The transmission is then lowered from the vehicle and disassembled completely by our transmission technicians. It is a difficult and expensive process that should only be done by those who are exceptionally qualified. Failure to follow this process correctly can lead to even more damage to your transmission. Therefore, you need to ensure that your car problem is correctly diagnosed by a reputable mechanic shop than can advise you on what needs to be fixed.

Transmission rebuild is expensive, so it is essential that repairs are done right the first time with a repair shop that knows not only how to fix the problem, but find the cause. Remember, the main goal here is to get your transmission back to a better working condition.

Consequently, it is important to note that there are two categories of parts that need to be considered in the process of a transmission rebuild; the Soft Parts and Hard parts.

• Soft Parts: These parts form the Rebuild Kit which contains all parts that are prone to wearing out.  By design they are expected to be replaced because they come into contact with a lot of friction and other shortcomings that make them last only for a certain period of time during the vehicle’s life-time.
• Hard Parts: These parts are made of steel or aluminum and they can include anything from a complete transmission case to a solenoid. Often, they don’t need to be replaced but damaged or worn out hard parts need to be considered during transmission rebuild.  

In most cases, the transmission is repaired or rebuilt when one or more of the soft parts such as the bands and clutches have gone bad.

Often, the hard parts such as the gears don’t go bad and therefore they are reused after a thorough inspection and cleaning. Soft parts have the tendency of wearing out in a group. Moreover, a transmission is very susceptible to debris thus when these soft parts stop functioning, the filters get filled up with debris that they cannot withstand. A more worrying situation is when the debris start going around in the system, it may end up damaging other soft parts. 

Mechanics need to have a transmission rebuild kit containing all of the necessary replacement parts in order to perform a rebuild. Different kits exist that may or may not include clutches, seals, bands, filters, modulator, gaskets, washers and O-rings. The kit you need depends on what parts need to be replaced in the transmission rebuild process. The type of kit we use is always chosen by the customer, and we provide warranties for all rebuild kit options.

Automatic transmission rebuild is a labor intensive process that requires two types of labor; labor for rebuilding of the transmission and labor for the removal and reinstallation of the transmission.

Warning Signs of a Failed Transmission

All modern cars are now made with computerized transmissions. Of course, nothing is full proof. As sophisticated as these modern transmissions can be, errors can make those gearshifts considerably less smooth. The check engine light is often one of the first telltale signs that your car is having trouble.

You might also notice some strange sounds or vibrations when something goes awry with your vehicle’s transmission. In other situations, your transmission might shift gears in unpredictable ways, resulting in uneven speeds and inconsistencies while driving. Your car may sound like it’s trying to go 100 miles per hour when it’s only traveling at 50, this is known as a transmission slipping in most cases. Additionally, there might be a few seconds delay when you shift from park to drive.

While some of these problems might seem negligible in the moment ignoring such issues could make the situation worse, resulting in decreased lifespan of your transmission and increased repair costs.

Transmission Slipping ?
